Big benefit concert at the Bach, Sunday
To show their appreciation for one of America’s premier music venues, Larry Vuckovich has gathered over a dozen seasoned veterans and new faces on the jazz scene who will perform an extended program of Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, John Coltrane’s music, some Afro-Cuban jazz, and Mexican boleros. Vocalists Jackie Ryan and Jeff Oster will also join the celebration, as well as Grammy nominated percussionist John Santos. This will be a swinging thank you bash with an international flavor introducing the Russian-born/American bebop guitarist Ilya Lushtak.

CalTrans: Bay Area deer get expensive tunnels to cross, humans get less expensive traffic signals.

Per this article:
Why did the deer cross the road?
“A similar study was successfully performed at Highway 89 near Lake Tahoe after drivers on that roadway were involved in many collisions with deer. The project led Caltrans to build tunnels under the highway for the deer.
‘It seems that deer will follow patterns and use the same crossings,” said Fish and Game biologist Cristen Langner. “They find the easiest way through stuff.’
Most drivers wouldn’t know it, but Highway 280 already has several tunnels specifically so that deer can get across the highway. Those tunnels are equipped with motion-sensor cameras to let Caltrans officials know if deer are crossing.”
Contrasted with this one:
Devil’s Slide crossing spurs renewed debate
“The crosswalk plan was reportedly the only arrangement that could balance safety with cost for Caltrans officials.”
“No price has been quoted for the new crosswalk, but it is certainly cheaper than alternatives such as building an overpass or tunnel. Those plans would have been too expensive for Caltrans, which is expected to foot the bill for the crosswalk, according to Horsley.”
I guess that tells us what we need to know in terms of funding priorities: Deer get tunnels, we get traffic signals.

Unsilent Night - Booombox Caroling in San Francisco Saturday Night
My family loves Unsilent Night. It is one of the few events we go to see every year in San Francisco.
A couple hundred people will meet at Dolores Park @ 18th Street at 7:30 pm and Saturday to walk the nighttime streets carrying media players of all shapes and sizes each playing a version of Phil Kline's orchestral piece for boomboxes. Check out the video that Patch ran about last year's event to get an idea of what I am talking about (link at the bottom of this posting) , get in your car and come participate. You won't be dissapointed.
The music starts so softly that newcomers often wonder what is wrong and restart their players. That guarantees that somebody is always playing out of sync, which adds to the fun. What you hear depends on which of the four parts you are playing, what fellow carolers near and far are playing, and how the sound bounces off and mixes with the ambient sounds of the busy city.
You can download a track of music from Kline’s website to play on your iPod or iPad before the event, or you can borrow a free CD or tape at the event. Come early if you want a CD or tape. They go quickly.
My video can be found at: http://patch.com/A-cL5g
7:30 pm Dolorez Park San Francico, CA

See you there.

HMB SOMA Holiday Art Walk, Sunday
In an effort to draw more attention to the art venues on South Main Street, which are often outside the awareness of tourists and townies alike, the art businesses south of Correas Street have joined together to be known collectively as HMB SOMA Arts.
The mission of the Half Moon Bay South Main Arts or “HMB SOMA ARTS” group is to support and promote visual and performance artists on SOuth MAin Street in Half Moon Bay.
We will be holding our First Annual Holiday Art Walk on Sunday, December 11th from 2 - 5 p.m. There will be refreshments, raffles and music at most venues.
We invite visitors to stroll South Main Street and discover a wealth of art treasures and gifts. Most of the businesses will be offering gift certificates as a holiday shopping solution.
Gingerbread House contest supports Coastside Children’s Programs, Saturday
Coastside Children’s Programs’ annual Gingerbread House Contest and auction supports affordable childcare on the Coastside.
Beginning at 4:30 on Saturday, December 10, at the Ritz-Carlton, a remarkable collection of gingerbread houses will be on display. Later that evening, the Ritz’s annual tree lighting ceremony will light up the coast.
Kids will love the spectacular entries, created by both community kids and Bay Area chefs. If you haven’t been to the tree lighting, why not start this year? You will also have an opportunity to bid on dozens of donated items in CCP’s first annual online auction.
Come early, because the tree lighting draws a crowd every year. Admission is free, but there is a $5 fee for valet parking.
